OS OpenData masterclass materials available to download

By , 12 December, 2013 8:00 am

We ran a series of free masterclasses this autumn to help new and exisitng opendata users to gain a greater understanding of open data and the tools and techniques to use open datasets, Following the success of the masterclasses across Great Britain, many of you asked to have access to the training materials.

We’ve now made these available on our website for you to download datasets, open source GIS and workbooks to take you through the exercises.

We’ve split them into the three separate modules:

1)     Getting started with OS OpenData

Perfect if you have no previous knowledge of using location data in a geographical information system (GIS). It’s intended as an introduction to OS OpenData products, and how to use them in a free and open source GIS.

2)    Styling OS OpenData vector products

If you feel comfortable working with OS OpenData and are looking to style vector data to apply your own colour preferences or serve through a web map service. All exercises follow our Cartographic design principles.

3)  Getting started with OS OpenSpace

Great if you uselocation data in a web application. This masterclass introduces you to using an application programming interface (API) to embed our maps into your web applications.

The materials have a ‘health and wellbeing theme’ and are designed to create interest and stimulate thinking around our current GeoVation Challenge.

We have also published the introduction to open data presentation for you to download and use the materials.

We hope that you find the masterclass materials of use and if you have any suggestions for future support material for using OS OpenData, email us at: opendata@ordnancesurvey.co.uk
